Exploring the Visual and Philosophical Possibilities of Grid Structures

ADF (NPO Aoyama Design Forum) is pleased to present "Grid” the 32st exhibition of the “ADF Art Gallery Project,” by Kiyoo Ota, an artist who through his architectural perspective, delves into themes of vision, space, and order, aiming to challenge and transform our perception of space, from Friday, February 21, 2025 to Saturday, March 8, 2025.

Kiyoo Ota 《Diamond Structure》

The grid is a fundamental framework used across disciplines such as architecture, design, mathematics, and urban planning. It is composed of systematically arranged lines or points that visually and physically convey structure and order. However, when interacting with other forces or visual effects, grids can undergo unexpected transformations.

Ota, starting with the grid as used in architectural frameworks, explores its visual and philosophical potential from multiple angles. By investigating visual phenomena like moiré patterns, Ota reveals moments where static order is disrupted, giving rise to dynamic and uncertain spaces filled with a unique sensory quality.

In architecture, perspective serves not only as a framework for understanding space but also as a filter that limits perception. Through a process of deconstructing and reconstructing the cube—a fundamental form of architecture—Ota challenges the illusions and boundaries created by perspective. This exhibition re-examines this filter, presenting works that shake the very foundation of how we perceive space.

With his background in architecture, Ota reveals the contradictions and possibilities embedded within the grid as a universal structure, offering new spatial experiences. By capturing moments where regularity and fluctuation intersect, he invites viewers to reconsider their worldview.
